A Taxi Drivers Life for Me

Taxi drivers are the shit. A good one transforms how I see the world. A bad one becomes a story that is often worth the trip (assuming you survive it.)

Many, many years back I was in a cab in New York and the driver was swerving down the street with his head out the window screaming at people. And then he got pissed. We had to merge from 3 lanes into 2 as some delivery trucks had parked on the left side of the one way street. This was too much and our man was foaming at the mouth and literally leaning out of the cab to punch each truck as we passed them. He hit them so hard that they rocked. By the last truck, this large gentleman began running after our cab, screaming profanities and looking like he wanted to kill our cab driver.

That’s when we hit the pedestrian.

That’s also when the cabbie decided we should accelerate and get the hell out of dodge. We had to call 911 on our cell phone from the back of the cab before he finally pulled over and agreed to wait for help to arrive. I believe we were late for our meeting. Oy vey. The person was injured but not bleeding profusely or anything. No idea what happened to them after the ambulance took them away.

Have any cabbie stories to share??

Quite difficult to top this one Sean :) I’ve had near death experiences (ok slightly exaggerated) in places like Rome and Poznan but luckily never crashed into anyone. Oh yes, and I did learn some new vocabulary from listening to taxi drivers, but not sure if I will be able to use any of these words in a normal conversation :)

I find it hard to believe anyone could teach you a new swear word you a) didn’t already know or b) couldn’t find a way to use in a normal conversation, Kris. ;)

I was saving up my taxi story … coming soon, promise ;)
